Past Fantasy Outlooks
Moffitt shocked the NASCAR world when he marched to six victories and ran away with the truck series championship crown at Homestead last November. He did it with the relatively new Hattori Racing, who was competing in just their second full-time season in the Gander Outdoors Truck Series. The even more shocking development was the team had to let Moffitt go at the end of the season due to sponsorship issues. However, the young driver landed solidly on his feet at GMS Racing. He will take over the reins of the strong No. 24 Chevy Silverado and look to defend his title in 2019. Moffitt will be teamed with crew chief Jerry Baxter and they will be the outfit to beat right out of the gates this season.
Signed in early February with Hattori Racing to pilot the team's No. 16 Toyota Tundra full-time in 2018.
As of mid-January it's not been announced that Moffitt is taking over the No. 11 RHR Toyota, but it is expected. Moffitt filled in brilliantly for Matt Tifft in this truck last year when he was sidelined with a brain tumor. In just six starts he picked up a victory (Michigan) and four Top-10 finishes. That certainly got our attention and the attention of the owners at Red Horse Racing. Moffitt has become a journeyman driver in NASCAR, with starts across all three top touring divisions the last four seasons. He'd love a full-time gig with this well-equipped race team. It would seem to be a marriage made in heaven, and we expect it to happen. If so, the potential for wins and Top-10 finishes is obvious.
Moffitt wasn't really expected to make his Sprint Cup Series debut in 2015, but Brian Vickers' blood clots and inconsistency in the No. 34 FRM team ushered in the young driver to an unexpected rookie campaign. Moffitt debuted in the second race of the season at Atlanta and recorded a shocking eighth-place finish in the No. 55 Toyota. While that would be the only top-10 finish of his season, his flashes of brilliance throughout the year bolstered expectations and opportunities to continue racing. With Michael Waltrip Racing folding at the end of last season, it leaves Moffitt a bit up in the air going forward. He was a developmental driver for that organization and now he's a free agent as we enter 2016. This talented, young driver will certainly land some part-time or full-time opportunities to race going forward.
