Loses grinder to Algeo
Carlyle lost to Bill Algeo via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC on ESPN 18 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Carlyle expended a ton of energy going for takedowns in Round 1, particularly when he had Algeo in a tight bulldog choke. Algeo was able to escape and make him pay for it a bit, reversing position and landing some ground-and-pound before the final bell. Algeo took his momentum into Round 2, taking the back of Carlyle shortly after the fight went to the ground and locking in a body triangle that allowed him to control most of the rest of the round. Carlyle did finish strong by reversing position and getting some ground-and-pound of his own, but the frame most likely went to Algeo. Carlyle had to dig deep in Round 3, as he continued to work for the takedown despite eating a few big knees. He had a few moments, but most of the damage was done by Algeo. Carlyle remains a unique and enthusiastic fighter, but he now falls to 1-2 in the UFC.

The fight was clearly going to be 29-28 in favor of one man but it's shocking not one of the the three judge's scored it for Carlyle. Spike got off to a flying start. He dominated Round 1 and was the more effective fighter in Round 2 before his gas tank began to empty. The biggest knock on Carlyle is that he's not the least bit economical with his energy. He's going 100 miles per hour all the time, as opposed to picking and choosing his spots. It's extremely entertaining to watch but leaves him vulnerable for a potential collapse in the later stages of the fight. Still, he appeared to have done enough to eek by with a decision here.
