The UFC released Townsend on Wednesday, Guilherme Cruz and Damon Martin of MMAFighting.com report.
ANALYSIS
Townsend's release doesn't come as a major surprise after he fell to 0-4 during his time with the promotion following his TKO loss to Dusko Todorovic last weekend.

Loses fourth straight

Townsend lost to Dusko Todorovic via TKO (punches) at 3:15 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
ANALYSIS
Townsend ate a few left hooks early, but the early clinch exchanges showed he might have a strength advantage. Even when his back was against the fence, he was able to land his best shots. He showed a good chin, but quickly fell behind in the striking count. As the final minute of the opening round approached, Todorovic started to unload combinations and for a second, it looked like Townsend's night could be over early. Townsend's chin held up, however, and he was able to escape the opening frame. He came out with a more aggressive approach, but was unable to find his range. A little over a minute in, he was taken down by Todorovic, who was careful to put him down in the center of the cage. Todorovic was able to pass to side control and eventually full mount, where he began to unload ground strikes. Townsend's chin only held up so long before the referee was forced to step in and put an end to the action. Townsend protested the stoppage, but it was clear he was compromised. While the power is there, Townsend is now 0-4 under the UFC banner and may not be a factor in the middleweight division much longer.
Paired against Dusko Todorovic
MiddleweightUFC
September 20, 2020
Townsend will face Dusko Todorovic in a middleweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for Oct. 3, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Townsend is in desperate need of a win, as he's coming off a string of three straight losses. Those three defeats represent the entirety of his UFC career to date. His most recent loss came by unanimous decision against Devin Clark back in February. In Todorovic, he'll face another fighter looking for his first UFC win, though the Serbian doesn't have any losses with the promotion yet either.
Offers little resistance in Rio Rancho
MiddleweightUFC
February 15, 2020
Townsend lost to Devin Clark via unanimous decision (27-30, 26-30, 26-30) at UFC Rio Rancho on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Townsend seemed to be in defense mode for much of the early going, as he spent the first few minutes with his back against the cage fending off Clark's takedown attempts. The referee eventually took them back to the center of the cage, and Clark shot immediately to put Townsend on his back. Though Townsend avoided damage for the most part, he still ended up finishing the round on his back. In the second round, Townsend started winding up for heavy shots, and while they nearly connected, they did open the door for another Clark takedown. Townsend was ultimately unable to escape and Clark maintained side control for the rest of the round. Entering the third in need of a finish, Townsend opened more aggressively but was again taken down. He was again unable to get back to his feet and Clark cruised to an easy decision. Townsend earned some good will with UFC brass by accepting this fight on short notice, but he's now 0-3 with the company and has an uncertain future.
Set for quick turnaround
MiddleweightUFC
February 7, 2020
Townsend will take on Devin Clark at UFC Rio Rancho on Feb. 15, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Townsend will replace Gadzhimurad Antigulov, who withdrew due to an undisclosed injury. It's quite a fast turnaround for Townsend, who fell to Bevon Lewis by unanimous decision on Jan. 25. He'll be looking to avoid falling to 0-3 in the UFC against Clark, who owns a 4-4 record with the promotion.
Falls to 0-2 in UFC
MiddleweightUFC
January 26, 2020
Townsend lost to Bevon Lewis via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-20) at UFC Raleigh on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
While Townsend lasted the full 15 minutes, he was credited with just 28 significant strikes and never managed to attempt a takedown. It was apparent after the fight that Lewis suffered some kind of leg injury, but he did a good job hiding it and Townsend was unable to take advantage. Through two UFC fights, Townsend has manged to land just 1.6 significant strikes per minute, which is cause for concern from both a real-life and fantasy perspective moving forward.
