Five-fight winning streak snapped
BantamweightUFC
May 16, 2020
Vera lost to Yadong Song via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Vera appeared visibly upset with the decision, but it appeared to be the correct call. He clearly won Round 3, but Song landed the harder, more effective shots over the course of the first ten minutes. Vera did eat all of those strikes without issue. Statistically, this was the closest fight you will ever see. Both men landed 69 total strikes and failed on their only takedown attempt. It wasn't the result Vera was looking for, but he is a much improved fighter compared to his early days with the company. Still just 27 years of age, Vera has been with the UFC since November 2014. This setback snaps a five-fight winning streak for the Team Oyama product, but he'll at least earn an extra $50,000 after this bout was awarded Fight of the Night honors.

Slated for regularly scheduled bout
BantamweightUFC
May 15, 2020
According to an Instagram post by Urijah Faber, Vera is slated to fight Yadong Song as was regularly scheduled.
ANALYSIS
Vera was looking at a potentially new opponent in Faber due to Song dealing with visa issues. Fortunately, the problem has been sorted out and Vera's initially scheduled fight appears to be on board after both fighters met the required weight threshold. As of Friday afternoon, Vera sits as approximately a +150 underdog for the fight.
Saturday opponent in limbo
BantamweightUFC
May 15, 2020
Vera may be facing a last-minute opponent switch, as Yadong Song is currently dealing with visa issues, Ariel Helwani of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a fluid situation at this time, as both fighters weighed in at 145.5 pounds, but the specific circumstances jeopardizing Song's fight status are unclear. Should he ultimately not get cleared, the UFC did bring in Urijah Faber to weigh in as an alternate, and he hit the scales at 153.5 pounds Friday morning. If Song isn't cleared to fight, the commission would still have to clear the Faber vs. Vera matchup, which may be a challenge due to the eight-pound weight difference.
Booked for fight with Song in May
BantamweightUFC
April 28, 2020
Vera (17-5-1) is slated to face Song Yadong (15-4-1, 1 NC) in a bantamweight fight May 16 at a UFC Fight Night event in Jacksonville, Mike Heck and Damon Martin of MMAFighting.com report.
ANALYSIS
Vera had previously been scheduled to face Ray Borg at UFC 249 in April, but that event was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The UFC is apparently optimistic it will be able to hold at least three events in Jacksonville in a one-week span in May, with the Vera-Yadong fight included on the third card. Vera will be taking a five-fight winning streak into Jacksonville after scoring his most recent victory in October, when he dispatched Andre Ewell in three rounds.
Moved to UFC 249
BantamweightUFC
April 6, 2020
Vera will now take on Ray Borg in a bantamweight matchup at UFC 249 on April 18.
ANALYSIS
Vera was originally scheduled for Jimmie Rivera at UFC 247, but after that fell through, was shifted to a matchup against Eddie Wineland at UFC Columbus on March 28. That event was ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and here we are. Vera will enter this matchup on a five-fight winning streak, and also bring massive height and reach advantages over Borg -- a former flyweight. He also owns significantly higher marks when it comes to striking volume, and his 68 percent takedown defense should theoretically hold up against the smaller man.

Vera will fight Eddie Wineland at UFC Columbus on March 28, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Vera was recently scheduled to face Jimmie Rivera at UFC 247, but he'll now look forward to a fight against Wineland due to Rivera's withdrawal. Coming off a five-fight winning streak, Vera will look to continue building his momentum with a victory over Wineland.
