Pierre-Olivier Joseph

Pierre-Olivier Joseph

24-Year-Old DefensemanD
Pittsburgh Penguins
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Joseph got his first full taste of NHL action last season. He scored five goals and 21 points while averaging 15:15 of ice time across 75 games. The 6-foot-2 blueliner put 108 shots on goals while laying out 88 hits. Joseph will again be limited to a bottom-four role during the 2023-24 season and shouldn't see much power-play time. Just three of his 21 points last year came with the man advantage. His offensive ceiling is limited to something in the 20-to-25-point range. Read Past Outlooks

Ends season strong
DPittsburgh Penguins
April 18, 2024
Joseph registered eight points in the Penguins' last 18 games of the season.
ANALYSIS
Joseph managed just three points through his first 34 appearances, which included several stints in the press box as a healthy scratch before finding his game in mid-March while Ryan Graves (concussion) was sidelined. The 24-year-old Joseph's inconsistency could create problems when the two sides try to finalize a new contract for the restricted free agent this offseason.

Best to keep?
DPittsburgh Penguins
November 3, 2023
Josh Yohe of The Athletic on Tuesday expressed that he doesn't see value in trading Joseph.
ANALYSIS
While the Penguins likely have a desire to shake things up after getting off to a 3-6-0 start, moving Joseph now would involve trading him while his value is low. Joseph has spent the last five contests as a healthy scratch after recording no points and a minus-3 rating in his first four games this year. He also comes with just an $825,000 cap hit, so getting rid of his contract wouldn't help much in that regard either.

2019
Joseph spent most of the 2021-22 season in the minors, racking up 33 points through 61 games with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The 23-year-old defender should stick with the Penguins for most of the 2022-23 campaign, but he'll likely be in and out of the lineup as a rotational, bottom-four option, severly limiting his fantasy upside.
Joseph was acquired by the Penguins from the Coyotes this offseason as part of the Phil Kessel deal and will bolster the organization's defensive prospect pool, which had become suspect in recent years due to the club's, understandable, win-now mentality. Still, the 20-year-old Canadian won't be seeing the NHL any time soon, given Pittsburgh is loaded on the back end and already has Juuso Riikola and Zach Trotman waiting in the wings. In his final junior season, Joseph notched nine goals and 38 assists in 62 games for a pair of QMJHL clubs. At this point, only fantasy owners in the deepest of formats will want to stash the blueliner away considering how far he is from making the 23-man roster.
