Schmaltz agreed to terms on a contract with Finnish team HIFK Helsinki on Wednesday, Patrick Williams of NHL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmaltz spent the campaign playing on a minor-league-only contract for AHL Tucson, recording just two goals and four assists in 30 contests. Having last played in the NHL back in 2018-19 with the Blues, this move overseas may mark the end of Schmaltz's NHL career.

Schmaltz had a promising future after the Blues selected him 25th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft. St. Louis kept adding to its blue line, however, and Schmaltz couldn't beat out Colton Parayko -- a fellow right-handed shot -- for a spot on the second pairing. Robert Bortuzzo also brings a rowdy edge which the Blues value, leaving Schmaltz out of a numbers game in The Lou. The 24-year-old has just three assists in 22 NHL games the last two seasons and will be hard-pressed to get big-club minutes again, barring injuries.
Since being selected No. 25 overall by the Blues in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Schmaltz has spent the last two seasons at the University of North Dakota, amassing nine goals and 27 assists over 83 caps. The 20-year-old will head back to college in the fall, but he put his skills on display for the Blues’ brass in July at their development camp, showcasing his blend of excellent vision, acceleration and puck-handling. The Blues have high hopes for what Schmaltz’s future might hold on their blue line, though his college point totals wouldn’t seem to suggest he’ll be an elite scoring defenseman at the NHL level. After he completes his junior season at North Dakota, Schmaltz could make the jump to AHL Chicago to close out the campaign.
Schmaltz is playing for the University of North Dakota.
