Cameron Tringale

At 34 and coming off his best season on the PGA Tour, things would appear to be looking up for Tringale. But he's had good seasons before and failed to carry any momentum to the following season. Tringale first earned $2 million-plus in 2014, and while he had some decent seasons following, he never reached those same heights the next six seasons. Tringale is in his 13th season on the PGA Tour and has never won. It's hard to imagine him suddenly figuring it out this far into his career. He's still capable of racking up plenty of earnings without a win, but considering last year was a career high, it's probably not wise to give him more than a passing look in salary cap leagues.

Tringale quietly had a steady season with only four missed cuts in 18 events but lacked high finishes to fall short of the $1 million earnings mark. Tringale improved his driving distance from a season ago and also ranked near the top of the Tour in SG: Approach. Although he's never won on Tour before, don't overlook Tringale as a sleeper and cheap option in season-long contests. He's trending in the right direction and could be a guy to breakthrough with his first win in his mid-30s.

At 31, Tringale's best years could be ahead of him, but to this point in his career, he seems to have peaked about five years ago. Though he was unable to find a victory during that span, he was able to post three runner-ups. The result was about $5 million in earnings over three seasons. Since then, he's had a couple poor seasons and one decent season. That decent season came last year and although he's trending upward, the upside just isn't there for salary cap purposes.

Tringale needed a T3 finish at the Web.com Tour Championship just to keep his PGA Tour card after a brutal 2017-18 campaign in which he missed 19 cuts in 26 events, falling to 195th in the FedExCup standings. The 31-year-old especially struggled off the tee, ranking 161st in driving distance and 191st in FIR percentage. Both his scoring and birdie average were well below average as a result, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the downward trend continue during the 2018-19 season.

For a guy who has yet to win on the PGA Tour, Tringale has made plenty of money, with five of his last seven seasons eclipsing the $1 million mark. Last season he slipped just a bit and failed to earn a top-3 finish for the first time since 2012, but he did pick up three top-10s. Though he underwhelmed last season, there's plenty reason to belive Tringale bounces back, even though he had to go to the Web.com Finals, where he finished 18th, to retain his card after finishing 133rd on the points list. He's a solid salary cap sleeper option who may not win, but has the game to post up to four top-10s over a season.

If not for the fall-portion of the season, Tringale would be on the outside looking-in this season. Tringale played his best last fall, with a Top-15 at the CIMB Classic and a runner-up at the Shriners Open. After that, Tringale did next to nothing last season. It's funny what a runner-up finish can do for a PGA Tour golfer, it almost guarantees a spot in the top-125. Tringale played better in the two years prior to last season, but in each of those seasons, he also relied upon a one runner-up finish. Considering Tringale's number was around $2 million in the two years prior to last season, he does hold some value in salary cap formats. The question is, can he find more high-end finishes this year? In drafts, he should go in the 10th-round or later.

Tringale is definitely not afraid of burning-out on the PGA Tour. He's one of a select few players that teed it up over 30 times last season, but unlike most of the others who did so, Tringale had plenty of success. In fact, what maybe the most impressive stat of his last year was that he missed only six cuts in 31 starts. On the downside, he had only three top-10s in 31 starts, so that could obviously be better. It's great that he plays so often, but he needs to put some more high-end finishes on his resume before being considered as a good salary cap option. In draft leagues his value is bumped a bit because he plays so often. He should find a spot in the 4th round.

Tringale had one top-10 all season last year, but it happened to be a solo-third at the Tampa Bay Championship, which netted him nearly $375k. At 26, Tringale still has time to improve, but there haven't been many signs that he's destined for greater things on the PGA Tour. His 3rd-place finish last year was the first top-3 of his career. The upside is there, but he probably won't reach it this season. In draft formats he should go in the 80-90 range.

Tringale joined the PGA TOUR in 2010 and after struggling during that season, he was forced to go back to Q-School. In his second go-round, he fared much better and kept his playing privileges for 2012. His performance last year was a mirror image of his sophomore season. He played a bunch of events and earned four top-10s. It doesn't look like his upside is all that high, but he's still young and has room to improve. He's probably not worth the risk at this point in his young career, though. In draft leagues, look for him in the seventh or eighth round.

It's safe to say that no sophomore improved more from his rookie season than Cameron Tringale last season. Tringale's rookie season was an absolute disaster as he made only five cuts the entire season. He turned those five cuts into three Top-25s, but that wasn't enough to save him from a return trip to Q-School. Tringale didn't waste his opportunity this time around, however, as he parlayed four Top-10s into a Top-70 finish in 2011. It's not uncommon for rookies to struggle to adapt to life on the PGA Tour, and considering Tringale's significant improvement from year one to year two, we can chalk up his rookie performance to something other than just his game. Tringale should continue to improve in year three on the PGA Tour.
