Hopes to return to NFL
WRFree Agent
March 27, 2022
Thomas, who hopes to return to the NFL, will work out at Oregon's Pro Day on April 1, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Thomas opted out of the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic and currently is under contract with the BC Lions of the CFL. After topping 100 receiving yards in three of his first four seasons in the NFL, Thomas had a more limited role in recent years and hauled in four of seven targets for 35 yards and a touchdown while rushing three times for 11 yards between 2018 and 2019.

Known for his lightning-quick speed in college, Thomas has mainly put that to use in the NFL as a special teams player. He managed to stay healthy for the first time in his first four years during the 2017 campaign, turning in 305 kick return yards in addition 14 catches for 143 receiving yards and a career-high two touchdowns. While he also posted a career-best 199 offensive snaps last season, his prospects as an offensive contributor remain bleak entering 2018 with Tyreek Hill, newcomer Sammy Watkins, Travis Kelce and Kareem Hunt among the pass catchers requiring targets in the passing game. The Chiefs re-upped Thomas this offseason on a one-year deal, but with Hill supplanting him as the primary punt returner, Thomas' role with the club may remain modest.
A speedy running back/wide receiver entering his fourth professional season, Thomas' biggest impact has come on special teams thus far. Unfortunately, he ceded punt return duties to rookie Tyreek Hill last season, making his 53-man roster spot more vulnerable. The 24-year-old still returned kicks for the Chiefs in 2016, perhaps giving him a leg up in the running at wide receiver entering training camp. Even if Thomas makes the roster, his single-digit catches (seven) last season and the number of bodies ahead of him on the depth chart don't position the speedster for a heavy enough involvement in the offense to warrant fantasy ownership in most leagues.
After a lackluster 2015 campaign culminated by a concussion in Week 11 that forced him out the remainder of the season, Thomas enters 2016 on the bubble for a roster spot following the team's multitude of wide receiver additions in the offseason. If he were to crack the 53-man roster, the majority of his work would probably come on special teams.
Thomas missed the first four games of his 2014 rookie campaign due to a hamstring issue, but increased his role in the offense as the season progressed. The fourth-round pick out of Oregon displayed the versatility to effect the game in multiple facets, collecting 113 rushing yards, 156 receiving yards and 833 return yards over the course of the season. While his role with the Chiefs remains tough to peg entering 2015, a fair comparison could be Dexter McCluster in his time with the Chiefs, as a running back and wide receiver combo. If Thomas can stay healthy, it seems reasonable to assume his numbers from 2014 will increase in his sophomore campaign as he expands his knowledge of the playbook and gets more experience under his belt, making him a potential late-round candidate in some formats.
At an undersized 5-9, 174, Thomas' best chance to see the field will be as a returner or slot receiver where he can showcase the exceptional speed which made him a fourth round draft pick out of Oregon. Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis are entreched as the one and two at running back, but Thomas could see the touches that Dexter McCluster saw in his tenure with Kansas City.
