Looney will provide depth at guard if he survives the roster cuts.
Looney has yet to play a down in his three-year career with the 49ers, but he has been taking first-team reps during minicamp and OTAs while Alex Boone has been holding out for a new contract. The 49ers and Boone still seem miles away in their negotiations for a new contract, so Looney has a legitimate shot at being on the starting line come week 1.
The second-year guard will compete for a reserve role on the offensive line but likely won't see much time on the field unless injuries befall the team.
