2019 Fantasy Outlook
Newsome is in line to battle for a depth role with Justin Jackson, who put together a solid four-game stint near the end of the 2018 season. Newsome has some positive tape of his own, namely a solid preseason in which the undrafted free agent carried the ball 42 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns, but a stellar performance this summer will be needed in order to usurp Jackson on the depth chart. Melvin Gordon's summer holdout does add a bit of intrigue to the situation. Read Past Outlooks

Little impact in preseason loss
RBLos Angeles Chargers
August 18, 2019
Newsome carried the ball five times for 17 yards and caught his only target for five yards in Sunday's preseason loss to the Saints.
ANALYSIS
The second-year back didn't look hampered by the minor leg injury he suffered in practice last weekend, but Newsome also didn't do much to make a positive impression on the coaches, posting pedestrian numbers for the second straight game. Troymaine Pope, however, did, ripping off an 81-yard score on a punt return. Even if Melvin Gordon's holdout drags on into the regular season, if the Week 1 roster allows for only one other running back behind Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson, Newsome may need to find a way to make an impact in the Chargers' remaining exhibition tilts to hang onto his spot.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
Newsome is one of three rookie running backs competing for the No. 3 job on the depth chart behind Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler. The all-time touchdown leader at Western Carolina, Newsome ran for 1,000-plus yards in three straight collegiate seasons while displaying above average hands for his position – both pluses for a Chargers offense that has lost veteran RBs Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver in consecutive seasons. Given Gordon’s injury history and Ekeler’s abilities as a scat back, there’s a realistic possibility the winner of the aforementioned job battle could see playing time right out of the gate, but not enough to warrant fantasy consideration.
