2023 Fantasy Outlook
Lawson posted seven sacks in 2022 after missing the entire 2021 campaign due to a torn Achilles. The 28-year-old defensive end is optimistic that he can hit double-digit sacks for the first time in 2023, and he's well positioned to do so as the top edge rusher in a Jets defense that has Quinnen Williams generating interior pressure, as well as the cornerback duo of Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed taking away passing lanes. Lawson will have competition for playing time from 2022 and 2023 first-round picks Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald, as well as the versatile John Franklin-Myers. 2021
Lawson was expected to help revive the Jets' pass rush after signing a three-year, $45 million deal with New York last offseason, but he tore his Achilles in August and missed the entire 2021 campaign. Prior to signing with the Jets, the 27-year-old defensive end totaled at least five sacks in three of his first four NFL seasons as a member of the Bengals. Lawson's expected to be available from the get-go in 2022, though it remains to be seen if he will fully regain his pre-injury explosiveness.
While Lawson tied for fourth in the league with 44 pressures last season, he picked up just 5.5 sacks, tying for the fewest among the 21 players with at least 32 pressures. He's a prime candidate to up his sack total as part of an imposing Jets defensive line after signing a three-year deal with New York in the offseason. However, the team's shoddy secondary will need to cover long enough to enable Lawson to get there.
