Vitale made some noise in training camp, and was trending toward not only locking up a roster spot, but having a semi-regular role in the Packers' offense. However, his momentum was stalled by a mid-August calf injury. Vitale is the best bet to be the Packers' top fullback in Week 1 if healthy, but it remains to be seen if that will be the case.
Vitale's role in Cleveland's offense is almost exclusively as a blocker, and that doesn't seem likely to change in 2018. The 22-year-old has yet to garner a rush attempt in his NFL career and has just seven receptions over two years.
Vitale has secured the starting fullback role with the Browns after starting the the final nine weeks of the season in 2016. While he doesn't produce much statistically, the fullback/tight end hybrid has the capability of being a pass-catching threat out of the backfield. With no competition in camp, the 22-year-old will get a chance to become more incorporated into offensive schemes this coming season.
An athletic fullback/tight end hybrid that gave rise to a position dubbed as "superback" while at Northwestern, Vitale offers the potential to keep opposing defenses off balance, considering the 4.6 speed he possesses at a weight of approximately 240 pounds. His diverse skill set is expected to earn him some modest touches out of both the backfield and at tight end in his rookie campaign, but his opportunity could be relatively capped on a Bucs offense that is suddenly brimming with talent.
