Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald confirmed that Slater, who declared for the 2021 NFL Draft in August, won't be rejoining the Wildcats after the Big Ten announced Wednesday that it would resume its postponed season in late October, Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic and the likelihood that Northwestern wouldn't be playing football in 2020 prompted Slater to declare for the draft, and though games will now be on the docket for the Wildcats, the standout offensive tackle won't reconsider his original decision. Despite not putting out any film in competitive games this fall, Slater is still viewed as a potential first-round pick in April's draft. He started 37 games during his three seasons with the Northwestern program and allowed no sacks, one quarterback hit and five pressures in 11 games as a junior in 2019.
