Steward announced Wednesday via his personal Twitter account that he has entered the NCAA's transfer portal with the intention of leaving Virginia Tech.
ANALYSIS
After taking a redshirt in his first season on campus in 2018, Steward carried just 19 times for 85 yards for Virginia Tech this past fall. The rising redshirt sophomore was unlikely to see his role expand in the next two seasons with Kansas transfer Khalil Herbert joining the backfield in 2020 and Rutgers transfer Raheem Blackshear expected to gain eligibility in 2021. If Steward moves on to another FBS school, he would likely have to sit out the 2020 campaign unless the NCAA grants him a waiver.
