Hatfield handled a modest role with the program in 2021, hauling in 15 catches for 294 yards and three touchdowns. The 5-foot-9 junior will look to take on a larger role with the Pirates in 2022, on a roster which has seen a lot of turnover. East Carolina has seen its top-three targets in 2021 leave the program, creating 233 vacated targets in the offense. Hatfield figures to take on a larger role in 2022, but he will face some competition for the top-option in the form of senior tight end Ryan Jones (37 catches for 442 yards and five touchdowns in 2021), along with incoming junior-transfer Jaylen Johnson (five catches for 49 yards in six games across three seasons with Georgia). Ultimately, Hatfield’s established chemistry with quarterback Holton Ahlers in an otherwise transformed receiver core figures to award him an uptick in usage during the 2022 season.
