Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
Sherfield had an uninspiring 2016 campaign after being a breakout performer in the year prior. Though he did average 13.9 yards per catch, Sherfield had fewer receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns than his breakout 2015 season. The return of C.J. Duncan could also be partly to blame, as could shoddy quarterback play. Duncan and teammate Caleb Scott are still in the picture, but quarterback Kyle Shurmur should give the passing game a bit more stability. Still, it remains to be seen if there is enough ball to go around between the three talented pass catchers.
By nearly any metric, Vanderbilt’s passing offense was one of the worst in the nation last season as the Commodores completed 51.1 percent of their passes for 2,062 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Sherfield was the lone bright spot however as he effectively lapped his teammates in any receiving category. He hauled in 51 of 80 targets (57.3%) for 659 yards and three touchdowns while the second highest outputs on the team in those categories were 26 receptions (Steven Scheu) and 339 yards (Caleb Scott). Though that catch rate is a brutal 57.3%, part of it can be explained away by the fact that Vanderbilt’s quarterback situation was so poor that it had to bench Johnny McCrary (54% completion percentage, 6:12 TD:INT) for true freshman Kyle Shurmur (42.7%, 5:3 TD:INT). Despite shoddy quarterback play and an unimposing supporting cast, Sherfield should be able to at least repeat his production from a year ago, if not surpass it, should Shurmur show any signs of improvement under center.
