24-Year-Old GuardG
Charlotte Hornets
2019 Fantasy Outlook
The 36th overall pick in the 2019 Draft, Martin is on the Hornets after four years of collegiate action, plus a year of sitting out due to a transfer. An older rookie, Martin will be turning 24 in late September after spending the past two seasons at Nevada. In 2018 and 2019, he was selected to the Mountain West All-Conference Second Team (Media) and All-Defensive Team (Coaches). As a senior, he averaged 12.1 points on 8.8 shots, 4.9 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 34.4 minutes. Martin appeared in five summer league tilts with Charlotte, averaging 8.6 points on 6.0 shots, 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals in 23.1 minutes. While Martin will have competition for minutes, the Hornets are in one of the deepest rebuilds in recent memory, so it's possible he'll get plenty of chances to make mistakes. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio

Cody Lee Martin was born in 1995 in Mocksville, North Carolina to Jenny Bennett. He has a twin brother, Caleb, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Hornets in July 2019. The two attended hometown Davie County High School for three years, with Cody averaging 15.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.4 assists as a junior. For their senior season, they transferred to the famed Oak Hill Academy in Virginia on a team that compiled a 41-4 record. Martin's favorite player and sports hero is LeBron James. You can follow him on Twitter and Instagram (@cody_martin15).

College/International Summary

Of the Martin twins who played together at NC State and Nevada, Cody was the better all-around player, while Caleb was a better scorer. As a freshman at NC State, Martin started three games and appeared in 16 others. He had a bigger role as a sophomore, playing in 33 games and starting 16. He averaged 6.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Martin sat out the 2015-16 season after transferring to Nevada. With the Wolf Pack, he started all but two games and became an impact player. As a junior, the 6-foot-7 wing provided 14.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per contest. He added 1.7 steals and 1.5 blocks and was named the Mountain West's Defensive Player of the Year. The Wolf Pack advanced to the Sweet 16. In a huge comeback win, Martin produced 25 points, seven assists and six rebounds in the Round of 32. Although he thought about entering the 2018 NBA Draft, Martin returned to Reno for his senior season. Martin contributed 12.1 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.5 rebounds during that campaign. He opened the season with three straight double-digit assist games. The Wolf Pack were beaten in the first round by Florida of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Martin had 23 points, five rebounds and three steals in the loss.

Martin generated six points (3-5 FG, 0-1 3Pt), eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in 32 minutes Wednesday in the Hornets' 109-98 win over the Heat.
ANALYSIS
Though Martin turned in a well-rounded stat line, those that used him in DFS or streamed him in season-long fantasy were probably expecting more from him while he started in place of an ill Terry Rozier. As a low-usage player for the Hornets, Martin's upside is fairly limited, but he at least appears to have a path to steady playing time. He's logged no fewer than 23 minutes in any of his last nine games, averaging 7.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.2 steals over that stretch.
