Edwards was selected by Boston in the second round (33rd overall) during the 2019 NBA Draft. Through Boston's 72 games of the pandemic-shortened season, the rookie appeared in 37 games for the Celtics and 13 games for the G League Maine Red Claws. With Boston, the guard averaged 3.3 points, 0.6 assists, and 0.3 steals over 9.5 minutes per NBA contest. Edwards made his NBA debut on opening night, Oct. 23, and generated three points and one rebound over 11 minutes during a loss at Philadelphia. On Feb. 13, the Purdue product had his best game with the Celtics in a win over Washington. In the victory, Edwards posted 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and four three-pointers. In mid-January, the Boston brass decide some time in the G League, with extended playing time, would assist with Edwards' development. The results were promising. In 34.3 minutes per game, Edwards delivered 23.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.8 steals and 2.8 made three-pointers per G League contest for the Red Claws. On Feb. 1 with Maine, Edwards delivered 41 points, five rebounds, three dimes and two steals during a win over Greensboro. The Celtics were one of 22 teams invited to the Orlando bubble for seeding and subsequent playoff games. Edwards appeared in two seeding games. He scored seven points versus the Nets on Aug. 5 and eight points versus Washington on Aug. 13. The rookie made one brief appearance during Boston's 17 playoff games.
