Personal Bio

Derrick Walton Jr. was born in 1995 in Detroit. He is the son of Angela and Derrick Walton Sr. Derrick Jr. played his high school ball at Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods, Michigan. At Chandler Park, Derrick Jr. played for his father, who was the head coach. On Jan. 31, 2012, Walton, a junior at the time, produced a quadruple-double during a win over Cesar Chavez Academy. During the summer of 2011, before his junior season, Walton verbally committed to the University of Michigan. As a Wolverine, Walton would be able to stay near his friends and family. After his senior year, Walton was named a 2013 Parade All-American honoree and the Michigan Boys Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year. At Michigan, Walton wore the number 10 to honor his close friend Dorian Dawkins, who passed away in 2009 after collapsing at a basketball game.

College/International Summary

Derrick Walton played from 2013 through 2017 at his home state school, the University of Michigan. Entering his freshman season, Sports Illustrated named him the ninth best freshman. That year, he started 36 of 37 games for the Wolverines and averaged 27 minutes per contest. He helped Michigan win the Big Ten Championship and reach the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. As a sophomore, he started the first 19 games before a left foot injury forced him to miss roughly the latter half of the season. He returned for his junior (2015-16) and started 33 games, missing three contests due to ankle injury. On Dec. 19 he registered a triple-double versus Youngstown State. As a junior, Walton averaged 11.6 points, 4.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game. As a senior, Walton started all 38 games for the Maize and Blue. That year, he guided Michigan to a Big Ten Tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16.

Derrick Walton was undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft, but played Summer League ball for the Orlando Magic. In July he signed a two-way contract with the Miami Heat. for the 2017-18 season, Walton played 27 games for the G League Sioux Falls SkyForce and 16 games for the Heat. The rookie from Michigan had is NBA debut on Nov. 6 with a brief appearance in a loss at Golden State. With the Heat, Walton had his best game on Dec. 22 during a home win over Dallas. The 6-foot-1 guard posted seven points, five assists, two rebounds and one three-pointer during the victory. With the G League SkyForce, Walton received significant playing time. Over his 27 G League games, Walton averaged 16.1 points, 7.1 assists, 2.1 three-pointers and 1.5 steals over 32 minutes per contest. On Nov. 18, Walton dished a G League career-high 12 assists during a loss to Rio Grande. On Feb. 2, Walton scored a G League career-high 41 points, plus 11 rebounds and seven assists, during a win over the Oklahoma City Blue. The Heat finished 44-38 in 2017-18 and lost to the 76ers in the first round of the playoffs.

2018

For the 2018-19 season, Derrick Walton Jr. played overseas in Lithuania and then Germany. He started the season with Basketball Club Zalgiris, which is based in Kaunas, Lithuania, and competes domestically in the Lietuvos krepA¡inio lyga (LKL, Lithuanian Basketball League). With BC Zalgiris, Walton He averaged 8.4 points and 4.4 assists in the LKL, and then 4.6 points and 2.5 assists during EuroLeague play. The club and Walton mutually agreed to part ways in February. Walton then joined Alba Berlin in the German Bundesliga. With Alba, he averaged 8.9 points per contest over 23 games. He also helped Alba reach the Basketball Bundesliga finals.
