Sanchez's yo-yo 2019 campaign included eight callups to the majors, though he collectively tallied only 31 at-bats with the Nationals. As in his previous big-league stints, the Venezuelan infielder showed limited patience at the plate -- he has taken a scant three walks in 166 career plate appearances -- while wielding a tepid bat. The .226/.250/.226 slash line Sanchez registered last season gave Washington little reason to keep him on the major-league roster for more than brief intervals, but his performance was no surprise given the lack of power and on-base skills on his minor-league resume. Once a stolen base threat -- he notched back-to-back 25-steal seasons early in his career -- Sanchez now barely reaches double-digits and has yet to swipe a bag in the majors. He did hit a healthy .316 in Double-A ball in 2019, but there's no reason to expect a major-league breakthrough in his age-29 season.
Sanchez can play all around the infield, but he's been a well-below-average hitter at every stop above rookie ball. He's never hit more than five home runs in any professional season, and he's posted OBPs of .292 and .285 at Double-A and Triple-A, respectively. Sanchez walked once in 75 plate appearances in his first exposure to big-league pitching while striking out 25 times. He has a track record of making more consistent contact, but his patience at the plate has always been lacking. Further, he hasn't run much at all since his back-to-back 25-steal seasons on the farm in 2011 and 2012. Wilmer Difo is expected to break camp as the Nationals' utility infielder, meaning Sanchez will likely be relegated to the minors to begin the 2018 season. A callup at some point seems inevitable, but even then, Sanchez will be merely a desperation add in NL-only formats.
