Est. Return 7/1/2020
2020 Fantasy Outlook
After showing promise across 17 big-league starts in 2018, Borucki missed nearly all of 2019 due to elbow trouble. It began in spring training, with Borucki removing himself from a minor-league game March 20. He opened the season on the 10-day injured list and did not debut until after the All-Star break. The left-hander was clobbered in a pair of starts before landing back on the IL with more elbow inflammation, and season-ending surgery was ultimately deemed necessary to remove bone spurs from the elbow. While Borucki does not throw hard and xFIP and SIERA do not support his strong ratios from 2018, he has a decent changeup and age is still on his side. The Blue Jays have added to their starting staff and Borucki has an option left; he may have to knock off the rust at Triple-A to begin the year, but Borucki will be on the short list for starting opportunities when injuries inevitably hit. May 2, 2020
Borucki (elbow) should be ready to pitch when MLB resumes play, Gregor Chisholm of The Toronto Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw experienced tightness in his elbow in February and was expected to be shut down for 2-3 months, but the delayed start to the season will give him a chance to make a full recovery before the season picks up again. "He's been feeling great," Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker said Friday. "This pandemic, obviously, is a terrible situation, but it's given Ryan a chance to kind of catch up. He's made some mechanical adjustments and feels great, arm feels great. He has been throwing sides. If there is a spring training and a season, which we're very hopeful at this stage, he should be right in the mix and a big part of it." While Borucki may have missed out on his chance to win a regular rotation spot this spring due to the injury, he could still make a case for a sixth starter/swing man role on an expanded Jays roster once training camp resumes.

Stat Review
How does Ryan Borucki compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA

Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

2019 Fantasy Outlook
Borucki wears 56 in honor of his idol growing up, Mark Buehrle. Like the former White Sox great, Borucki is a lefty with good command who works quickly and features a changeup. His change had a top-25 swinging-strike rate last season and generated a higher percentage of whiffs than the same pitch from Zack Greinke, Dallas Keuchel, Jeremy Hellickson or Luke Weaver, to name a few specialists. What has been intriguing about this kid is how he has skyrocketed through the system, going from High-A to the majors in under two seasons, and he's done it without skipping much of a beat. His 2018 MLB strikeout rate was below average for a starting pitcher, but he had higher rates throughout the minor leagues. He could be a sneaky play in 2019 in deeper leagues, but with a level of risk that comes from pitching in a division loaded with tough hitting and mostly filled with ballparks with unforgiving run environments.
